About This Service

Clean Tank,
Efficient Heating System

Over time, all oil tanks accumulate sludge, water and microbial growth at the bottom. This contamination damages boilers, blocks filters and reduces heating efficiency — but it doesn't mean you need a new tank.

Britteco's professional tank cleaning service removes sludge, water, sediment and diesel bug from the interior of your tank, restoring it to clean, efficient operation. We work on plastic bunded tanks, steel tanks and older single-skin tanks.

The service includes draining residual fuel, physical cleaning of the tank interior, removal and responsible disposal of all waste, and a final inspection. Usable fuel is separated and returned to the tank where possible.

Signs Your Tank Needs Cleaning

Is Your Oil Tank Dirty?

Most oil tanks need cleaning every few years, but many homeowners and farmers only notice when something goes wrong. Don't wait for a boiler breakdown — look out for these early warning signs.

Recurring boiler lockouts or breakdowns Dirty fuel reaching the burner is one of the most common causes of boiler failure. If your boiler keeps cutting out, the tank may be the culprit.
Frequently blocked oil filters If your boiler's filter needs replacing more often than usual, sludge from the tank is almost certainly the cause. Cleaning the tank stops the problem at source.
Dark or discoloured fuel Clean heating oil should be light yellow or clear. If you notice dark, cloudy or foul-smelling fuel, your tank has accumulated significant contamination.
Tank has never been cleaned If your tank is more than 5 years old and has never been cleaned, it almost certainly has a build-up of sludge and sediment at the bottom that needs removing.
Water in the tank Water enters oil tanks through condensation or loose fittings. Even small amounts encourage microbial growth — which quickly leads to serious sludge problems.
Reduced heating efficiency If your home takes longer to heat up than it used to, or your oil consumption has increased, contaminated fuel burning inefficiently may be the reason.

Frequently Asked Questions

Oil Tank Cleaning — Common Questions

As a general guide, domestic oil tanks should be cleaned every 3 to 5 years. However, if you're experiencing recurring boiler problems, blocked filters or notice dark or foul-smelling fuel, your tank may need cleaning sooner. If your tank has never been cleaned, we'd recommend having it done regardless of age.

The cost of oil tank cleaning depends on the tank size, the level of contamination and your location. We provide a free, no-obligation quote before any work begins. Call us on 01 539 2798 for a quick estimate.

Our engineers first pump out all remaining fuel from the tank. We then physically clean the tank interior, removing sludge, sediment, water and microbial growth. All waste is collected and removed from site for responsible disposal at a licensed facility. Usable fuel is separated and returned to the clean tank.

Yes, your heating will be offline for the duration of the clean — typically a few hours for a standard domestic tank. We reconnect the system and test it before leaving, so you'll have heating back the same day in most cases. We recommend scheduling the clean during warmer months if possible.

Yes. We clean tanks that are still in active use — this is the most common scenario. We pump out the remaining fuel, clean the tank, and return the usable fuel when the job is done. There is no need to wait until your tank is empty before booking a clean.

We clean all common domestic and commercial oil tank types used in Ireland — including plastic bunded tanks, single-skin plastic tanks, and steel tanks. We work on tanks of all sizes, from small domestic tanks to large agricultural or commercial storage tanks.

In many cases, yes. If your boiler is cutting out frequently, the filters are blocking often, or the boiler is burning poorly, a dirty oil tank is often the root cause. Cleaning the tank removes the source of contamination and in many cases resolves the boiler problems without needing any boiler repairs.

We provide oil tank cleaning services across all 32 counties in Ireland — including Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Meath, Kildare, Wicklow, Kerry, Donegal and all surrounding areas. Not sure? Give us a call and we'll confirm.
