About This Service

Know the Condition
of Your Oil Tank

Most oil tank problems develop slowly and invisibly — until something goes wrong. A professional inspection identifies risks before they become costly emergencies, whether you're maintaining an existing tank, buying a property with an oil heating system, or ensuring compliance with Irish regulations.

Britteco's certified engineers carry out thorough visual and physical inspections of your oil tank, pipework and fittings — checking for corrosion, leaks, structural integrity, correct positioning and regulatory compliance. You receive a written condition report with findings and any recommended actions.

We inspect all tank types across all 32 counties — domestic, agricultural and commercial. Inspections can be combined with cleaning, fuel polishing or tank replacement where needed.

When Do You Need This?

Reasons to Book a Tank Inspection

An oil tank inspection is not just for emergencies. There are many situations where a professional assessment protects your property, your finances and the environment.

Buying a property with an oil heating system An inspection before purchase identifies any tank defects, compliance issues or contamination risks — potential costs that the buyer would inherit.
Tank is over 10 years old Most domestic oil tanks last 8–15 years. An inspection on an ageing tank gives you an accurate picture of its remaining life and any risks.
Insurance or mortgage requirement Some insurers and mortgage lenders require a formal tank inspection report before providing cover or approving a loan on a property with oil heating.
Boiler or heating system problems If your boiler is cutting out, filters are blocking or fuel consumption has increased, a tank inspection identifies whether the tank is the root cause.
Suspected leak or oil smell A persistent oil smell or visible staining near the tank requires urgent investigation. An inspection confirms the source and extent of any leak.
Annual maintenance & peace of mind Regular annual inspections are the most cost-effective way to stay ahead of problems, maintain compliance and extend the life of your tank.

Frequently Asked Questions

Tank Inspection & Servicing — Common Questions

We recommend an annual inspection for all oil tanks, particularly those over 5 years old. At a minimum, tanks should be inspected every 2 to 3 years. If you're buying a property, have experienced boiler problems or suspect a leak, you should book an inspection immediately regardless of when the last one was carried out.

The cost of an oil tank inspection depends on the tank size, type and your location. We provide a fixed-price quote before attending. Call us on 01 539 2798 for a quick estimate — most domestic inspections are competitively priced and include a written report.

Our inspection covers the tank exterior and structure, bund integrity, pipework and fittings, fill point and vent, tank siting and location compliance, water contamination testing, and fuel quality assessment. You receive a written report covering all findings and any recommended actions — clearly explained in plain language.

While not legally required, a tank inspection is strongly recommended when buying a property with oil heating. Oil tank defects, contamination or non-compliance issues are not always visible and will not typically appear in a standard property survey. An inspection before purchase could save you from inheriting a costly problem — and some mortgage lenders or insurers may require one.

In Ireland, oil tanks must be correctly sited — generally 760mm from boundaries, 1.8m from buildings and openings, and away from watercourses. Bunded tanks are required within 10m of a watercourse or 50m of a well. Tanks must also be on a suitable base and be accessible for inspection and maintenance. Our engineers check all of these during an inspection and advise on any compliance issues.

A bunded tank has a secondary containment layer — essentially a tank within a tank. You can usually tell by the appearance: bunded tanks are wider and heavier than their capacity suggests, and typically have a visible gap or ribbing between the inner and outer walls. If you're unsure, our inspection will confirm the tank type and whether it meets current Irish regulations for your site.

Yes. If the inspection identifies that your tank needs cleaning, fuel polishing, fuel removal or replacement, Britteco can carry out all of these services — you don't need to find additional contractors. We provide a complete end-to-end oil tank service across Ireland.

We provide oil tank inspection services across all 32 counties in Ireland — including Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford, Meath, Kildare, Wicklow, Kerry, Donegal and all surrounding areas. Not sure? Give us a call and we'll confirm.
